Stacey Crump Boone, our June Bride

Friday, June 19th, 2009

A beautiful evening and about a hundred close friends welcomed Stacey Crump and Dennis Boone to their nuptial service on June 6. The ceremony was celebrated at her father and stepmother’s family estate in Croom, MD. A bountiful buffet was created by Chef John Kozik of Skippers Pier Restaurant. Stacey has been an accountant and customer service coordinator for Kaine Homes for six years. We wish Stacey, Dennis and their four children the very best.

Growing Up in Calvert in the 1950's Part 4

My first BB gun.

I was about 10 years old and there were less than 15,000 people in the County. The daily mail delivery  was a big event. When you’re waiting for the mailman to deliver your first BB gun, the pain is excruciating. Although we had a mailbox of size, I knew the gun was too big and would have to be delivered to the front door. For what seemed an eternity, I would wait by the window every day hoping (praying??) the mailman would stop and get out of his car. My heart would sink as he drove away but finally one blessed day the gun arrived. My brand new Daisy Red Ryder BB gun. It even had woodlike graining in the plastic stock. I know today how Ralphie felt in the movie “A Christmas Story” when Santa brought his Red Ryder (”it’ll put your eye out”) BB gun.

OK, so I had my BB gun. Now what? Well we know that guns are made to shoot things so tin cans and pie plates became easy targets. It didn’t take long, however, before live game became more appealing and wildlife around the small farm ponds began to come under seige. My primary target was the frog. They were in plentiful supply and I sadly admit that a small number of them perished from some well aimed shots.

Several years later, my parents bought me a .22 caliber rifle and my hunting career expanded as I sought out the mighty dump rat in our local landfill. More on that story in my next chapter of Growing Up in Calvert in the 1950’s…

Kaine Homes Hosts Event To Honor Donors To The College of Southern Maryland’s Record Setting Capital Campaign:

CSM Exceeds Campaign Goal by Raising $7.7 Million

On Friday, March 13, 2009, the employees of Kaine Homes hosted a lovely event orchestrated to make everyone aware that philanthropy is alive and well in Southern Maryland.  The evening event honored the major and advanced donors that contributed a significant portion of the greater than $7.7 million in cash, pledges and grants that were donated to the College of Southern Maryland’s first major fundraising campaign.

The CSM Foundation’s “Campaign for the Next 50 Years: Envision the Potential-Make a Difference” marks a major milestone in the college’s 50-year history and the campaign far exceeded its stated $5 million goal due to the generosity of new and old friends of the college.  Kaine Homes has been and continues to be a major contributor to the mission of CSM.

Working with Campaign Chair Mike Besche in leading the campaign were Kaine Homes’ own Director of Land and Business Development and CSM Foundation Board Chairman Don Parsons.  In addition, the fundraising efforts were led by Foundation Directors Candice Quinn Kelly, Casey Smith, St. Clair Tweedie, John McWilliams, Steve Proctor, Ray Werneke, Rick Tepel and Jay Lilly under the management of Campaign Manager Michelle Goodwin, CSM’s Vice President of Advancement.

“The success of this campaign dramatically illustrates that the community we have served throughout the years sincerely appreciates CSM’s critical role in building the vitality of our region,” remarked CSM President Brad Gottfried.

The extremely well attended event brought a triumphant conclusion to two years of fundraising efforts.  Of course, CSM will continue to accept any donations that trickle in.  Please contact Don Parsons at Kaine Homes if you care to contribute.
